Observation Narrative
An open 1/4 acre bog fed by groundwater seepage from the base of Big Mountain. Although very small, it is a pristine and outstanding example of the community type. An abundance of Lycopodium alopecuroides, a coastal plain disjunct, is floristically significant and anomalous. Ilex opaca, Rhododendron catawbiense, Amelanchier arborea, Kalmia latifolia and Hypericum densiflorum form a tall border to the open bog.
Plot located on the eastern side of small bog just south of Rt. 635, 0.4 mi east of Interior.
See plot JBNF039 (sampled in 2009) for a larger sample of this vegetation and additional discussion of its treatment.
